"I had the luck to be born into a family where we believed anyone can do anything. I credit my mother with introducing me to art.  She encouraged me to draw long before I was in school, and when she learned of the Rural Art Program, now called the Wisconsin Regional Art Program, she started us kids on doing oil paintings to enter the yearly exhibits. As a result, when Life Magazine was planning a feature called “Harvest of Arts in the Midwest,” they contacted our family, and we were featured on one page of the 5/18/1953 issue.  Our art was described as “the hesitant geometry of the untutored primitive.”  That might be considered a put-down, but we continued in our untaught art nevertheless.
